چکیده

We present near infra-red (NIR) adaptive optics assisted spectroscopic observations of the CO (∆μ = 2) absorption bands towards the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. The observations were made with NAOS-CONICA (ESO VLT) and have a FWHM resolution of 0. 15 (14pc). Kinematic analysis of the observations reveals a decoupled core and strongly non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity profiles (VPs) in the central 0.2 arcsec (19pc). NIR imaging also indicates an asymmetric elongation of the central isophotes in the same region. We use spherical orbit-superposition models to interpret the kinematics, using a set of orthogonal “eigenVPs” that allow us to fit models directly to spectra. The models require a central black hole of mass 1.2 −0.6×10 M⊙, with a strongly tangentially biased orbit distribution in the inner 40pc.

Central K - band kinematics and line strength maps of NGC 1399 ⋆

In this paper we present for the first time high spatial resolution K-band maps of the central kinematical and near-infrared spectral properties of the giant cD galaxy in the Fornax cluster, NGC 1399. We confirm the presence of a central velocity dispersion dip within r ≤ 0. 2 seen in previous long-slit studies. Our velocity dispersion maps give evidence for a non-symmetric structure in this ce...

A two - arm gaseous spiral in the inner 200 pc of the early - type galaxy NGC 2974 : signature of an inner bar

TIGER integral-field spectrography and Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging of the E3 galaxy NGC 2974 are used to derive the kinematics of the stellar and ionized gas components in its central 500 pc. We derive a numerical two-integral distribution function from a Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) mass model using the Hunter & Qian formalism. The TIGER as well as published long-slit stellar kinema...

AGN - Induced Cavities in NGC 1399 and NGC 4649

We present an analysis of archival Chandra and VLA observations of the E0 galaxy NGC 1399 and the E2 galaxy NGC 4649 in which we investigate cavities in the surrounding X-ray emitting medium caused by the central AGN. We calculate the jet power required for the AGN to evacuate these cavities and find values of ∼ 8×10 erg s and ∼ 14×10 erg s for the lobes of NGC 1399 and ∼ 7×10 erg s and ∼ 6×10 ...

Eddington limited starbursts in the central 10 pc of AGN , and the Torus in NGC 1068

We present results from a survey of nearby AGN using the near infrared adaptive optics integral field spectrograph SINFONI. These data enable us to probe the distribution and kinematics of the gas and stars at spatial resolutions as small as 0.085 ′′. We find strong evidence for recent but short lived starbursts residing in very dense nuclear disks; on scales of less than 10 pc these would have...

Kinematics of Molecular Gas in the Nucleus of NGC 1068 , from H 2 line emission observed with VLT ⋆

We present results about the distribution and kinematics of the molecular environment of the AGN in NGC 1068, over a 1.5 ′′ × 3.5 ′′ region around the central engine in NGC 1068, derived from H 2 line emission detected with ISAAC at VLT/ANTU on ESO/Paranal. The H 2 emitting molecular gas is found to be distributed along the East-West direction and with two main peak emission (knots) located at ...
